Flower Beds:
Mix Plant-tone into the top four or five inches of soil at a rate of 4 lbs. per 100 square feet (or 1/2 cup per plant). An additional feeding of 1/4 cup can be made once a month after plants are well established.


Bulbs:
Place one heaping teaspoonful of Plant-tone beneath bulb and mix thoroughly with soil. Feed established beds at a rate of 4 lbs. per 100 square feet (or 1 cup per 10 sq. ft.).


Roses: When planting, mix 1 cupful of Plant-tone with soil at the bottom of hole and 1 cupful with soil used to refill hole. For established plants, apply 1 cupful evenly on soil around plant and work lightly into top 1 inch of soil. Repeat monthly during summer months.


Shrubs:
When planting, mix 1 cupful with soil in the bottom of the hole and one cupful with the soil used to refill the hole. Feed established shrubs with 1 cupful per foot of branch spread.


Vegetables:
When preparing garden, apply 40 lbs. of Plant-tone per 1,000 square feet and work into the top 4 to 5 inches of soil (or 1 cup per 10 sq. ft.). For individual plantings, add 2 tablespoons per vegetable. Apply at same rate once a month during growing season.

Concerns about Cocoa Meal and Pets


Plant-tone does contain less than 10% cocoa meal which is the remaining mash after the cocoa butter is extracted from the bean. The concern regarding dogs and chocolate is the presence of theobromine – a caffeine like compound. Toxicity can be an issue when a dog ingests 100 mg per kg of body mass or more of this substance. In processed milk chocolate that would be the equivalent of at least 1 oz per one lb. of body weight. As stated above the cocoa meal we use has the butter extracted and the level of theobromine is nil. A dog would need to ingest a tremendous amount of the pure meal (most likely much more than its’ own body weight in mass) and this is a very small percentage of the finished Plant-tone product. We believe there is no cause for concern over the presence of cocoa meal in Plant-tone. We use it in our own gardens and we have dogs. I hope this answers your question.
